Saudi state-owned news channel Al-Ikhbariyah TV at 1024 gmt on 1 February carried an « urgent » screen caption that read: « Royal order appoints Prince Miqrin Bin-Abd-al-Aziz as second deputy prime minister. »
The post of second deputy prime minister has been vacant since the appointment of the late Prince Nayif Bin-Abd-al-Aziz as crown prince in October 2011, and the holder of this post is generally seen as second in line to the throne. Crown Prince Salman currently holds the position of first deputy prime minister, while King Abdallah is also the prime minister.
Prince Miqrin is a former intelligence chief who was removed from his post and appointed as a special adviser to the king in July 2012.
