Qatar could add 600,000 foreign workers in 2013 (Construction Week Online, 03/01/2013)

Qatar could add 600,000 workers to its construction labour force this year, says a leading developer.

An additional 600,000 foreign workers could be deployed in Qatar in 2013 as the country’s 2022 World Cup build-up accelerates. Major infrastructure work such as the Doha Metro and other transportation-related projects are expected to begin in earnest this year, leading to increased demand for construction labour, both skilled and unskilled.

This is according to real-estate developer Khalifa Al Muslemani, who told the Al Sharq daily that he anticipated “a slew of projects to be launched this year, which may add some 600,000 rectruits to the workforce.”

This follows news from the National Office for Statistics that Qatar’s population increased by 7,5% last year to 1,83 million as of 31 December.

The figue accounts for persons of all ages, both nationals and non-nationals, within the boundaries of the country, according to the Qatar News Agency (QNA).

An interesting trend is the growing gender disparity in the Qatari population, with 74% male and 26% female, stated QNA.
